ABOUT THE ARTIST
Originally from Winnebago, Illinois, I moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 2003. I currently live in University City, Missouri with my wife and son Charlie.
While I had never stepped foot in an art museum or gallery until I was an adult, art has played an important role in my life since I was a kid. I struggled in school. However, I loved art. In those days, I meticulously drew copies of my favorite comic books, baseball cards, and cartoons. While I was often in the principal's office more than the classroom, I never missed art class.
In college, I took a painting class where I first experimented with abstract art. I was hooked. I said goodbye to drawing pictures of Jimmi Hendrix and Jim Morrison in exchange for beer and pizza and for the first time, began creating original work. The subject matter of my art no longer dominates my technique, but rather color, texture, and flow.
Since college, I have continued to try to push myself away from structure and formalities in my paintings. I rarely use a paint brush. Instead, I use pallet knives and screwdrivers. I also try not to limit the medium. Many of my paintings consist of ordinary house paint, housing caulk, and other everyday materials.
My exposure to and understanding of art has certainly changed over the years. I have been lucky enough to see some of the most beautiful paintings in the world in some of the most famous museums. However, the fun and satisfaction in creating something for myself and others to enjoy has never diminished. I now try to encourage this same passion in others in my full-time job as a fourth grade teacher in the Normandy School District.
